<image:caption>When Susan quits her job in London to sail around the British Isles with only the basics, she begins to fall in love with the traveling lifestyle and extends her trip by three years to sail to several different countries. In the process, she discovers an appreciation for life and all it has to offer, through both good and bad experiences. This is not just a journey around the continent, but a journey of one’s soul and figuring out what truly matters in this world.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Ken Smith has spent much of his life living off-grid in the Scottish Highlands. Loch Treig provides his food, and the surrounding forest his firewood. Ken talks about what led him to leave his home and job in Derbyshire, England, to travel new parts of the world, which ultimately taught him about his love for nature and living a more simple and peaceful life. This was one of my FAVORITE books I read in 2024, and I hope you decide to read it, too!</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Real Life Survival Stories - Island of the Lost: An Extraordinary Story of Survival at the Edge of the World By Joan Druett (2007)</image:title>
<image:caption>In 1864, two separate ships are shipwrecked on an island 285 miles south of New Zealand. Auckland Island is one of the most dangerous places on earth to try and survive - freezing rain and high winds are a constant occurrence. The two crews are only separated by 20 miles of cliffs, but while one crew bands together to survive and ultimately escape, the other crew turns on each other to suffer a much worse fate. Using historical records and survivor’s journals, Joan Druett weaves a tale of determination and leadership, but also chaos and madness.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Real Life Survival Stories - 438 Days: An Extraordinary True Story of Survival at Sea By Jonathan Franklin (2015)</image:title>
<image:caption>What Salvador Alvarenga thought would be a two-day fishing trip turns into 438 days on the ocean - the longest amount of time anyone has survived alone at sea ever recorded. After a severe storm causes his boat engine and electronics to fail, Alvarenga must use his limited resources to try to stay alive. Struggling with constant shark attacks, a lack of drinking water, and a lack of food, Alvarenga considers if it’s even worth trying to live. But he manages to keep his mind in survival mode long enough to wash up on shore 9,000 miles from home, 14 months after he originally set out. In this account, Alvarez chronicles his journey at sea and how he was able to use his limited resources to survive.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Real Life Survival Stories - Jungle: A Harrowing True Story of Survival in the Amazon By Yossi Ghinsberg (1985)</image:title>
<image:caption>Yossi Ghinsberg and three other travelers meet in Bolivia to travel together though the Amazon Rainforest. But their travels turn into a fight for survival after realizing that trekking through the jungle isn’t as simple as a regular hike in a park. The travelers split into groups of two, but Ghinsberg becomes separated from his partner and must survive in the heart of the jungle alone for weeks. He is eventually rescued, but not before the horrors of the jungle - wild animals, flesh-eating insects, and torrential rains - make their mark on Ghinsberg. This story is not for the faint of heart. <image:title>Blog - Real Life Survival Stories - Unbroken: A World War II Story of Survival, Resilience and Redemption By Laura Hillenbrand (2010)</image:title>
<image:caption>Set during WWII, Hillenbrand gives the account of Air Force Lt. Louis Zamperini, whose strength and resilience will help him to survive a nightmarish journey. Zamperini’s bomber crashes into the Pacific Ocean, but he manages to escape the wreckage on a life raft. Here, he will face sharks, emeny aircraft, starvation, and thirst, but that is merely the appetizer to what lies ahead after he washes up on an island and is captured by the Japanese. Here, he faces torture, starvation, forced labor, and additional unimaginable punishments. But Zamperini remains unbroken as he waits for his eventual rescue. Though the circumstances are grim, this story will inspire the reader with its message of hope.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Real Life Survival Stories - Skeletons on the Zahara: A True Story of Survival By Dean King (2004)</image:title>
<image:caption>In the year 1815, the crew of the Commerce led by Captain James Riley left port in Connecticut for a regular trading voyage. However, a shipwreck off the coast of Africa changed everything for the crew. It starts with a confrontation by native tribesmen, then being sold into slavery by desert nomads. The crew is then led through the Sahara desert, where starvation, thirst, sandstorms, barbarism, and even death, test them daily. Captain Riley needs to find a way to save his men and hatches a plan, but it comes at a price. This is a journey through the desert unlike any other you’ve heard, where secret cities and hidden oases are discovered, and brotherhood is more important than ever.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Real Life Survival Stories - Into Thin Air: A Personal Account of the Mt. Everest Disaster By Jon Krakauer (1997)</image:title>
<image:caption>This book details Jon Krakauer’s experience climbing Mt. Everest during the deadliest season in its history. Krakauer was on assignment to report how the mountain was experiencing growing commercialization, led on an expedition by world-renowned guide Rob Hall. Unfortunately, Hall, and many other climbers under his guidance, will not make it home. After a rogue snowstorm hits the mountain, the climbers must fight for their lives, some so severely frostbitten that they will lose limbs. Krakauer is one of the lucky few to come home alive, but not without the guilt of losing friends and acquaintances on the journey. Krakauer discusses what causes us to ignore our humanity and be lured to these expeditions, often at risk greater than we can comprehend.</image:caption>

A few weeks into the trip, Messenger is hiking alone when he is brutally attacked by a grizzly bear. Over the next several days, Messenger and his friends fight for his survival, tending to his wounds the best ways they are able until they can find help. <image:title>Blog - Real Life Survival Stories - In the Heart of the Sea: The Tragedy of the Whaleship Essex By Nathaniel Philbrick (2000)</image:title>
<image:caption>In 1820, the whaleship Essex set out for a routine whaling voyage. Unfortunately, this voyage will not end like the others; an 80-ton bull sperm whale will strike their ship, sinking it in to the waters of the South Pacific. The 20-person crew will spend 90 days at sea in three small lifeboats, heading for the coast of South America 3,000 miles away. Facing starvation, disease, and the unknown depths of the ocean, only 8 members of the crew will survive the journey. This tragic story was the inspiration for the literary classic, Moby Dick by Herman Melville.</image:caption>

However, Riley finds a new acting opportunity at the shop - pretending to be employee Nathan’s girlfriend in front of his crush to make her jealous. <image:title>Blog - Books I’ve Been Reading in Spring 2025 - The Other Bennet Sister By Janice Hadlow (2020)</image:title>
<image:caption>Historical fiction/retelling. For fans of Pride & Prejudice, this story imagines what would happen if Mary, the outcast Bennet sister, was given a chance at happiness. Mary is the sister that Jane Austen loves to hate. She’s too intellectual, not very interesting, and not very pretty. The first part of this story retells Pride & Prejudice through Mary’s eyes, and everything comes to a head when Mary is ridiculed by her family in front of everyone at a party. From this point, the reader will see how Mary evolves from self-conscious to self-assured, undoes the damage done to her by her family, and perhaps finds love. You will see all the familiar characters of P&P, both the ones you love and the ones that make you cringe. This is a must-read for any Jane Austen fan!</image:caption>

<image:caption>Romance. Elsy loves romance books, specifically the Quixotic Falls series, which she enjoys discussing with her virtual book club. The club usually gets together in person at a cabin once a year. But this year, everyone is too busy with other parts of their lives to meet up, and Elsy decides to set out alone to the cabin for a week of romance novel-reading. However, on her way to the cabin, Elsy’s car breaks down in a town that seems awfully familiar to her… because it’s Eloraton, the fictional town from Quixotic Falls. How the heck did Elsy get here?! Also, Elsy knows every character in these books, but she can’t recall the grumpy-yet-handsome bookstore owner she meets her first night in town. Who is he? If you’ve ever wished you could be a character in your favorite book, this story is for you!</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Winter Picture Books - Walking in a Winter Wonderland Written by Felix Bernard and Richard B. Smith & illustrated by Tim Hopgood (2016)</image:title>
<image:caption>I love the Tim Hopgood illustrated song books! Along with this book, Hopgood has illustrated books for “Moon River”, “Singing in the Rain”, and “What a Wonderful World”. The illustrations are always bright, colorful, and detailed. I’m always interested in how illustrators create their art, and Hopgood’s use of various mediums to create his illustrations is fascinating. The result is absolutely beautiful, and I could stare at his illustrations all day! This book shows people walking through various winter woodland scenes with some sweet animals. It is a great one to read (sing!) aloud with your child to introduce them to this classic song.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Winter Picture Books - Sleep Tight Farm: A Farm Prepares for Winter Written by Eugenie Doyle & illustrated by Becca Stadtlander (2016)</image:title>
<image:caption>In this book, a young girl walks the reader through all the preparations her family farm makes for winter. Things such as harvesting the last of the fall vegetables, putting straw over the garden beds, closing the chickens into their coop, and making sure the beehives are covered. The illustrations in this story are reminiscent of American folk art, which is fitting for the farm theme. many children learn about farms in elementary school, and this book would be a great addition to the curriculum as it focuses on a different aspect of farm life.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Winter Picture Books - Winter: A Solstice Story Written Kelsey E. Gross & illustrated by Renata Liwska (2023)</image:title>
<image:caption>This story imagines how animals may celebrate the winter solstice together, offering gifts to help each other get through the season. The illustrations feature soft colors and textures, which makes it feel very cozy and dream-like. There is also a fold-out page that shows a large winter tree the animals decorate, which children will love to look at! This book inspires readers to be kind and think about simple ways they can share their light with others. It is a beautiful book, and a great one to read on the first day of winter!</image:caption>

Squirrel is confused about what that white stuff is on the ground, and is suspicious of the snow squirrel who may have taken his hazelnuts. Bird explains the facts about snow, how fun it can be, and tries very hard to help squirrel understand that snow squirrels can’t steal hazelnuts. Children who enjoy humorous stories will love this chaotic squirrel, and will also learn some interesting facts about winter!</image:caption>

The illustrations are bold, with strong black outlines that children will be able to see easily. When her friend tells her, “this day is so gray”, she responds by telling her about all the beautiful colors she can see. By the end of the story, the pessimistic friend is seeing all the beauty her friend sees. This book serves as a great lesson about perspective and attitude. We could probably all use this reminder once in awhile! The text is simple, and children will have fun looking for all the colors the girls mention in the snowy illustrations!</image:caption>

The watercolor illustrations are absolutely stunning, and it is neat to see how the fall colors slowly transition into winter ones as the story progresses. This would be a great book to read as fall winds down and winter begins. After reading, you could go outside and look for the things you saw in the book!</image:caption>

She reminds them often that they don’t have to be afraid, because “you’re snug with me”. This books has such unique and mesmerizing illustrations which are inspired by Indian art. There are many patterns and wintery colors, and staring at them is almost calming to me. This book serves as a reminder to take care of our planet and only take what we need from it in order to protect the many animals who also call it home.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Count winter animals from 1-12 in this beautifully illustrated story! This book features animals that you would find in the Alaskan tundra, from common animals such as foxes, to animals children may not have heard of, such as the musk ox. While the text on each page is short and lyrical, there is a section in the back of the book with information about the different types of animals. The illustrations were created with scratchboard and watercolor. I am always drawn to scratchboard illustrations, as they take so much time to create and the results are so unique! This story would make a great read aloud for a younger audience as they are learning to count.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Nonfiction. Patrick Laurie decided to return to his family farm in the region of Galloway, Scotland, which is the opposite of what many people have done. Galloway is becoming a deserted landscape, having become commercial forest instead of the beautiful moors that once covered the hills. This has led to the decline of some species of ground-nesting birds, one of which is the curlew. Patrick invests in some Riggit Galloway cattle, which is a traditional breed that requires farming practices much older and different from the conventional cattle farming of today. Laurie discovers the relationship raising the cattle have with restoring the land, and how farming can heal a vanishing landscape.</image:caption>

Korede is a nurse in Nigeria, who is constantly on stand by to help her sister, Ayoola, clean up her messes - literally - as Ayoola has a bad habit of killing her boyfriends. When Ayoola sets her sights on a doctor named Tade in Korede’s place of work (a doctor who Korede also happens to be in love with), she must make a choice: Turn in Ayoola, or turn on Tade. This book is a unique perspective on how far a person will go to protect their family, no matter the circumstances.</image:caption>

Scarecrow lives a lonely, solitary life until a crow chick falls out of a nearby tree. Scarecrow cares for the chick, nurturing a sweet friendship between the two. There is so much texture and depth in these illustrations, making them enjoyable for children and adults alike!</image:caption>

<image:caption>This silly story is about a squirrel who is convinced someone is stealing his tree’s leaves! It takes a few forest friends to explain to squirrel that no one is, in fact, stealing his leaves; the leaves fall is a result of the autumn season. This book features some speech bubbles, make it a great intro to graphic novel-style stories. At the end of the book, there is an informational page about the changes fall brings to the trees and other aspects of nature.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Fall Picture Books - Goodbye Summer, Hello Autumn Written & illustrated by Kenard Pak (2016)</image:title>
<image:caption>I don’t think a seasonal book list could be complete without one of Pak’s seasonal transition tales! In this story, a child greets telltale signs of the approaching autumn, be it plants, animals, or weather. They each respond with how they’re preparing for the new season. The watercolor illustrations in this story are mesmerizing, and it is fun to see how the colors gradually become more fall-like as the story progresses.</image:caption>

<image:caption>This cute story shows all the trouble Papa Bear goes through trying to get his cubs dressed to go outside to enjoy a fall day. Most parents will be able to empathize with Papa Bear and the chaos of trying to get a child dressed! Children will have fun seeing all the trouble the little bears are getting into. I found this book delightfully funny, and would love to see more of Papa Bear and his mischievous little crew. This picture book is another great introduction to the graphic novel form as there is no descriptive text, just simple dialogue written in speech bubbles.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Fall Picture Books - Hello Autumn! Written & illustrated by Shelley Rotner (2017)</image:title>
<image:caption>This is a fantastic introductory nonfiction book. It features simple text with interesting words to discuss (ex. shelter, burrow, migrate, harvest). The book details things that happen to nature in autumn, such as animals hibernating or migrating, and seeds dropping. There are so many wonderful photographs in this book! I have found that children love seeing photographs of other children and animals, so I often try to include them in reading lists. This book will be sure to pique a child’s interest about the natural world during fall!</image:caption>

<image:caption>This book is a reminder of how you can find magic in ordinary days if you just take the time to observe your surroundings. The child in this story is bored on a gray fall day, but going outside to explore leads her to interesting discoveries and a calmness in her mind. The illustrations in this book are black and white backgrounds with primary color accents. Even though it is not the most traditional fall tale, this story is a great reminder of the power of spending time in nature.</image:caption>

While at the lake, Celeste starts having dreams of drowning. Weird things also start happening in the house. Then, Celeste sees a girl in the bathroom mirror. Who is she? If he can help the team make it all the way to state, maybe people will start taking him seriously. And maybe this is a chance to make his brother’s dreams come true as well.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - YA Books by Native American Authors - Hearts Unbroken By Cynthia Leitich Smith | Muscogee (2018)</image:title>
<image:caption>Contemporary Fic/Romance. It is senior year, and when Louise (Muscogee) hears her boyfriend insult Native people while she’s right next to him, she decides it’s time to break things off. She puts her focus into spending time with her family and friends, and reporting for the school newspaper since they have a huge story to cover. The school is putting on a production of The Wizard of Oz, but with a more diverse cast, and Louise’s mostly-white Kansas town is not happy about that. At the center of the controversy is Louise’s younger brother, who is playing the Tin Man. Louise and her partner on the newspaper (and potential new love interest?), Joey, must try to get to the bottom of who is fueling the fire over the production while navigating their own feelings towards each other.</image:caption>

Elatsoe will uncover a lot of dark secrets about her town and community in the process, but if it will help protect her family before someone else dies, it must be done.</image:caption>

Niizh changes schools, the new one slightly better than the other, where he meets a new friend, Roger - the principal’s nephew, who is white. Together, Niizh and Roger go on an adventure like no other when they decide to rescue one of the students at the school who runs away during a winter storm. This time together will teach them more about their shared future in the community than they realize.</image:caption>

<image:caption>You can tell from the cover alone that the illustrations in this book are going to be stunning! Each year, a young boy celebrates Thanksgiving with his family and friends in the woods on his grandparents’ farm. Everyone helps set up and brings a dish to share. The text in this story is simple, whith a couple of sentences on each page. You will see lot of soothing greens, browns, and muted oranges in the illustrations as this story mainly takes place in the woods. The color palette is almost pastel, and there are so many beautiful details to see on each page. I especially love the glow of the twinkle lights and campfire as it starts to get darker outside during the Thanksgiving celebration! This book is a great reminder that holidays are meant to be shared, and there is always something to be thankful for.</image:caption>

But this year, Peyton decides to give pie a try. Her family invites lots of family and friends over for Thanksgiving, and each family brings a different type of pie. Peyton struggles to find one she wants to try, but when her aunt tells her the secret to making pie taste great, Peyton’s perspective begins to change! This story discusses how the Wampanoag tribe in Massachusetts helped the pilgrims learn how to grow food on the land, leading to the first Thanksgiving. The illustrations are reminiscent of plains style art, a historic art form used by Native people who lived in the northwestern Plains. This story is a helpful way to explain to children the history of Thanksgiving, and the important role the First People played in making it happen.</image:caption>

The book uses simple rhyming text, with one to two sentences on each page. The illustrations are colorful and intricate, which will captivate both adults and children alike. At the end of the book, there are pages that go into more detail about each of the celebrations mentioned. <image:caption>Tuyet is upset that her Vietnamese American family will be eating duck on Thanksgiving. She wants her family to have turkey, like they talked about at school. This story teaches children that not everyone in America celebrates Thanksgiving the same way, and it’s okay to have different traditions. What matters most is being able to spend time with the people you love!</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Celebrate Thanksgiving with These Picture Books - Our Table Written & illustrated by Peter H. Reynolds (2021)</image:title>
<image:caption>Although it’s not a traditional Thanksgiving story, this book serves as a simple reminder of the importance of spending time with loved ones. Violet feels alone most of the time. Her family is distracted by their screens, and time together around the dinner table has disappeared. Violet misses spending time together as a family, and she has a plan to bring the family back together. But, she won’t be able to complete the plan alone! The text in this story is very simple, and the illustrations are either all-violet or all-color depending on how Violet is feeling. I love the message Reynolds communicates about how technology can be a useful tool, but it can also take away from the things - and people - that matter most.</image:caption>

<image:caption>In this story, a young girl writes down all the things she is thankful for on colorful strips of paper to make a chain. The things she is thankful for are ordinary, but precious. This book will inspire readers to observe the world around them to discover what ordinary things they can be thankful for, such as warm soup, the night sky, and color. You may even want to create your own thankful chain when you’re finished reasinf! The illustrations in this one are really neat, as they are created 3-dimensionally and then photographed.</image:caption>

The turkey in this book catches a bad case of stage fright when he finds out that he will be a part of a school’s Thanksgiving play. The turkey makes a break for it, and the school ends up on a wild turkey chase! Will the turkey end up in the play, or will he be able to make his escape?
